Every year, the Blue Wild Ocean Expo in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida delivers the best of the best in the sport of freediving. And that includes freedive safety advocates, experts, speakers, demonstrations, and tips. Our sport can be glamorous, thrilling, heart-pumping, and sexy, but it’s none of these unless you’re alive and kicking. And that’s where the safety gurus come in; their job is to teach you how to thrive in the sport and stay safe doing it. Although freediving is accompanied by its share of risks, the Blue Wild Expo is chock full of experts on safety who will gladly share their knowledge with you to help make you a safer, more confident, more competent diver. And sexier, by default, of course. Tap into the free wealth of knowledge this weekend! Here are a few opportunities for you to jump on:
Terry Maas – Oceanic Safety Systems
Terry will be demoing his latest super streamlined FRV at the show and will gladly discuss with divers how to use his device to keep you safe while spearfishing. As the author of two foundational books on the sport of freediving, he is a great person to talk to about how to stay safe in the water.
Ted Harty – Immersion Freediving
Ted is giving a hands-on demo of exactly what to do if you see a diver experience loss of motor control (LMC) or freediver blackout. Ted invites you to suit up and get in the on-site pool with him while he coaches you in rescue scenarios. Free sessions with Ted begin on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 2:30 at the Blue Wild.
Martin Stepanek – Freediving Instructors International
Martin is a world class freediver with many accomplishments under his belt. He is a freedive educator and will happily talk to you about safety. His organization is also offering a fun breath-hold competition and demonstration at the on-site pool, showing how breath-hold training is safely accomplished. Check it out on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 11:30-12:30, 2:00-2:30, and 4:30-5:00.
Kirk Krack – Performance Freediving International
Kirk is an expert freediver with a penchant for safety education. He has trained several freedivers to championship status and will be sharing some survival tips in his presentation on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 1:00 in Room 316. Presentations are free to attend with your Blue Wild admission fee. Say yes to free life-saving knowledge!
