SHOULD I REALLY INVEST IN FREEDIVER TRAINING IF I ONLY DIVE DURING LOBSTER SEASON?
DO I NEED A VHF MARINE RADIO IF I ONLY DIVE FROM MY SKIFF?
WHAT IS SHALLOW WATER BLACKOUT?
Often times freedivers don’t even realize they can benefit from safety protocols and training education until it’s too late. That’s what happened to the Richardson family. With over thirty years of spearfishing and freediving experience, the Richardson’s thought they were well-prepared for their sport. “I had never even heard of shallow water blackout until my son Robert took a freediving course only months before his accident,” admits DiveWise founder, Julie Richardson. “When Robert told me about shallow water blackout, I dismissed it,” says Julie, “I thought shallow water blackout only happened to inexperienced or careless divers.”
The Richardson family isn’t the exception. Freediving and spearfishing to many are a way of life, a natural way to explore or hunt in the underwater realm – not a sport that requires training. If you were told that training, new safety protocols and better tools might one day save your life, would you believe it?
