Julie Richardson is the President of DiveWise, a non-profit organization she founded in 2008 after nearly losing her two eldest sons to shallow water blackout. DiveWise’s mission is to prevent freediver accidents through safety education and awareness so that no diver will suffer an avoidable tragedy. A popular public speaker and published writer, Julie speaks passionately and personally about shallow water blackout, boater safety, spearfisher and freedive training, plus topics relating to freediving children and families.
Julie has appeared on National Public Radio, the Weather Channel’s “Freaks of Nature,” SpearDivers TV and CBS 4 Feature News, which received an Emmy nomination in 2013. Her articles have been published in Spearing Magazine, Fish Monster and the Triton Newspaper in the United States and internationally in Dive Pacific, New Zealand Spearo, eBlue, Deep Magazine, Deep Worldwide, as well as International Freediving and Spearfishing News.
Her work has been instrumental in the establishment of Australia’s Spear Safe program, a national initiative to improve safety for spearfishers and she is the recipient of the 2010 National Award from the National Water Safety Congress for her work in promoting water safety.
Residing in Miami, Florida, Julie and her family have a close relationship to the sea. Her husband, Walter, is a yacht surveyor who loves to spend his free time spearfishing with their three sons. In his younger years, Walter worked as a treasure diver on a three-masted schooner and survived being shipwrecked from this vessel after spending three days at sea on a rubber raft.
Julie and Walter have three sons, Robert, 28, David, 24, and Jason, 11. Robert and David have been freediving since they were small, are spearfishermen, scuba certified, and both are credentialed captains, as is their father Walter. Together, this family has cruised Florida’s Okeechobee Waterway, Alaska’s Inside Passage, the Bahamas, the Florida Keys, and local South Florida waters.
